I have built up experience of drawing for embroidery for over 15 years. Drawing hundreds of designs for over 20 large scale tapestries.
I usually research the visual images, draw and design the panels. Every image has a meaning, a history a story to tell.
I have been intrigued by the many recurring images and their meaning within the tapestries. These images are like "Echoes". As the drift across many tapestries, linking these tapestries together. But as I put this collection together, I realised they begin to tell a far wider story.
Instructions
Print out the image on an A4 sheet of paper.
Trace the drawing onto the piece of cloth.
Tips
If you don’t have a light box, try using a window, by sticking the drawing with masking tape onto the window, then place the cloth on top with masking tape. Then trace with a HB pencil onto the cloth.
Then you are ready to go.
Tips for beginners, here are a few tips.
If you cannot acquire a piece of unbleached linen, a plain piece of calico or cotton will do.
You should use an embroidery hoop, to keep it tense and flat, but can do without it.
If you can get some 2 ply crewel yarn, but again it is not essential. You can use stranded cotton.
Pick colours you feel fit the guidance of the coloured drawing.
If you have not stitched before look online to learn a couple of basic stitches.
You need a stitch to do a line and stitch to fill in shapes.
Try a few samples first on another piece of cotton or linen.
Then you are ready to go.
Have fun, be as creative as possible with the stitching.
The sample thistle has been Stitched by Carmel Daly.
Each download contains a secret message! Put them together and story begins to emerge. It's a puzzle!
